Canvass for a Cause. Duh. You’re on our site. We are an eclectic group. We keep activism a sustainable force by keeping full-time activists who are ready to help when that bat symbol appears in the sky. Our Executive Director is a computer consultant who used his business to raise funds to start CFAC. We have a lawyer and a nationally known DJ who could be making a ton more money elsewhere, but choose to work with us because it’s important to them to make a difference. The lawyer said, “I see problems with the world and think, I could fix that with CFAC.” CFAC has also been called the cure for apathy. Many of our staff and volunteers are young, idealistic, grassroots types who were getting burnt out in organizations that didn’t seem to be making a big enough difference. I thought CFAC was only about gay marriage? No. We like to say we’re “always progressive, occasionally queer.” In addition to working towards marriage equality, we have raised money for homeless shelters, earthquake victims, and marijuana legalization no matter the sexual preferences and identities of the people involved. We are wherever we need to be. We are based in California, but we have sent staff to marriage equality fights in the states of Maine, New York, and Washington. We will likely send people to other battleground states in 2012, if not sooner. We currently have offices in San Diego, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, with an office in Sacramento coming soon. Once we are firmly on the ground in the major cities of California, we have plans to expand to other parts of the country. Where does all the money you collect go? To our lavish lifestyles—private jets, hideaways in the Canary Islands. No, actually everyone here is grossly underpaid and puts in far more hours than they are properly compensated for. The money collected pays for offices and to keep people on staff who are trained to talk about the issues we endorse to make a difference when and where we can. When are the Cubs going to win the series? Who the hell knows? That may be the one problem CFAC can’t cure. We often are. And we are always looking for volunteers to get involved. Often our best staff members come from the ranks of our volunteers. Besides the obvious, using money to persuade people on issues of LGBT rights and marijuana legalization, we raised money for the Red Cross to help Haiti. After a hate crime in San Diego, we started a victims’ compensation fund that was quickly able to raise $1400 to cover some medical expenses for the victim. We have a team in AIDS Walk that raises thousands of dollars. We will continue to help a diverse range of people. Do you support individual candidates? No. We canvass for cause, not candidates. Sometimes there is overlap between a cause and a candidate, but we are about the issues, not individuals.
