Media coordinator
Kimberly is the Media Coordinator at Canvass for a Cause. She had a relationship end, which pushed her to go out into the working world after a four-year break. Her background is in makeup and cosmetics, where she managed a team of twenty-two beauty artists, and she also went to school for webdesign and worked at Qualcomm. She didn't vote for a number of years and felt like maybe if she ignored the problems they'd go away, but she woke up one day and those problems were still there. So she felt compelled to begin fighting for equal rights, and when she saw there was a group on Craig's List that was working to repeal Prop 8, she got involved.
She feels like we are at the cutting edge of a major movement in the nonprofit world. How we do things is so different from any other nonprofit; we are a campaign that keeps on running. We get important issues that come up all the time that have to do with fighting for equality, and by going out and talking to voters face-to-face, we're able to make a difference. She says, “I do not think there is anything more important that we can do. Even if there's no ballot issue, any time we go out there we are changing minds, putting face to the LGBTQ community, and changing the way people look at the community. Any issue we take on as we grow, we can accomplish.”
Within the next five to ten years, Kimberly would like to see the country move way to the left. She would like us to keep the Fair Education Act, have more comprehensive education in schools, alleviate the bullying epidemic, and get back same-sex marriage in California.
Something that might surprise people about her is that she used to be a hippie and followed the Grateful Dead.
